Modem Server FAQs

Q: I've heard ADSP doesn't have flow control, so Zmodem won't work.

A: ADSP has dandy flow control, Hermes is just junk.

Q: Do you have to run MS and the BBS on seperate computetrs?

A: Modem Server was written so it enables intra/node Appletalk (if it wasn't already enabled) so ADSP can work on the same computer.

Q: Why does Modem Server keep cycling and initalizing the modem?

A: You probably don't have the carrier detect reporting in the modem set up right. Modem Server sees carrier detect so it hangs up and re-inits, but it doesn't go away. Usually &C1 needs to be in init string to report Carrier Detect. Also make sure you have a modem cable with HWHS, and Carrier Detect (same cable used in all BBS sysems).

Q: Does Modem Server handle a Hurdler Card?

A: MS does not, I can't afford one, so I wrote this instead. Mac SEs are 75bucks, almost half as much as a 2 port card, so you can get an SE (with Ethernet), for each 2 modems. Take up a lot of room, yes, but you could just use motherboards with a floppy drive to boot MS, and rack mount them. Use one power supply for 4 boards (just splice the wires for additional connectors off the orginal power. Then turn the cases into neato fish tanks. That's what i'm going to do. If someone sends me a hurdler however, I will support it then!
